Summer Cinema Fun and Film Shootouts Hello SDAFF friends, We want to thank everyone who attended the vigil last Thursday for Euna Lee and Laura Ling, two journalists imprisoned in North Korea. We had a great turn out and really appreciate the community support for this event.

Free Outdoor Film at Balboa Park, August 6
We're excited to partner with the San Diego Museum of Art, August 6, to screen "Shadow Magic" - a story about the introduction of the cinema in Beijing, China in 1902, when a young portrait photographer befriends a newly-arrived Englishman with a projector, camera and plans to open the Shadow Magic theatre.

Member Spotlight: Jeffrey Brosbe
This week we meet SDAFF Member, Jeffrey Brosbe. "I know that my meager contribution is but a droplet in the sea, but it is my way of saying that I admire and deeply appreciate the hard work that goes into this great annual event. Beer and Sake Festival
The 2009 Beer and Sake Festival is this Thursday, June 25. With over 50 specialty beers, sakes, and wines, this Japan Society event promises to be a very memorable evening. For the first time, the event will feature the California State Regional Sushi Masters Competition.

6th Annual Asian Heritage Awards
One of our favorite cultural organizations and media outlets, Asia Media Inc., will be hosting the 6th Annual Asian Heritage Awards titled "Legacy and Legends," July 25. Members of the community have the opportunity to vote and honor outstanding Asian and Pacific Islander Americans for their contributions in 14 fields, ranging from education to youth leadership. Voting is going on right now and ends June 26. The winners will be announced during a gala dinner aboard the USS Midway in Downtown San Diego. View nominees and cast your vote. A Shoutout for Film Shootouts
6th Annual 72 Hour Film Shootout
Our friends at the Asian American Film Lab in New York present the 72 Hour Film Shootout, a nationwide competition where filmmaking teams have 72 hours to complete short films up to five minutes in length. The Shootout, that takes place from June 26-29, intends to create opportunities for Asian Americans to demonstrate their talent, gain exposure in the entertainment industry. San Diego 48 Hour Film Project The 48 Hour Film Project comes back to San Diego, Aug 14-15, for another year of competition where filmmaking teams have 48 hours to write, produce, edit and turn in a complete film. The contest takes place in over 80 cities worldwide with the winning team from each city going on to Washington, DC to compete for Best Film of the Year. Selected films are also screened in a special showcase at the Cannes film festival in France. For more information and to sign up for registration, click here. |
