Official Festival Film List Released, Plus Outdoor Screening on Thursday

Hello SDAFF Friends,

After months of recruiting and watching hundreds of films, the programming staff of the San Diego Asian Film Festival is proud to announce the official list of films for our 10th anniversary festival! Check out the massive list of films here, representing productions from 20 different countries. This is our largest, most ambitious festival program in celebration of our 10th. In the next few weeks, we will launch our new web site with photos and synopsis of each film. So be sure to keep checking back.

In the meantime, SDAFF invaded Comic-Con this year with a booth promoting our upcoming Extreme Program (a collection of "fringe" films from Japan). We were happy to see so many SDAFF patrons come by our booth. We also got to visit with some past festival alumni including Perry Shen, Kelly Hu, C.S. Lee, and others.

We also had the opportunity to co-present a series of Chinese children's films with the San Diego International Children's Film Festival (SDICFF). Thanks to all who came out to support! SDICFF is still happening now with events at the Carlsbad Library and the New Children's Museum in Downtown.

Free Outdoor Film at Balboa Park, August 6

We're excited to partner with the San Diego Museum of Art, August 6, to screen "Shadow Magic" - a story about the introduction of the cinema in Beijing, China in 1902, when a young portrait photographer befriends a newly-arrived Englishman with a projector, camera and plans to open the Shadow Magic theatre.

So bring a blanket and picnic basket for SDMA's popular free film series, located on the lawn adjacent to the Museum.

Free Screening of "Shadow Magic"
Thursday, August 6
8:00 PM
San Diego Museum of Art
1450 El Prado, Balboa Park

  Member Spotlight: Johne Chandler

This week we meet an SDAFF member who is very active in the community, Johne Chandler. There's a good chance you have seen and met him at a community event.

"I loved the Japanese movie sequel, 'Always 2.' It was so touching with so many human factors to it. There was the dorky guy with questionable talents and a child helping to bring to bring those talents out. It was about creating human bonds. There were lots of heartfelt feelings."

  Reel Voices Updates

Reel Voices, our high school summer film internship, is well under way. The students are in the midst of filming their short documentaries to be screened at a special program during the festival. Mike Watson, coordinator of Reel Voices, will be blogging every week about the students' progress, which will give you an inside look at each of the student participants.
