When the divine archer Hou Yi goes missing on a quest to rescue the last dying sun, his wife, the moon goddess Chang Er, goes searching for him in an unlikely team-up with the legendary Nanyang Bandit. Meanwhile, an immortality elixir left in her safekeeping brings out Hou Yi’s covetous and murderous apprentice Peng Meng. Traversing uneasy liminal spaces, THE HOUSE ON THE MOON is a cross-genre, cross-time, and cross-space journey of star-crossed frenemies and lovers, each frame dripping with surrealist yearning for home, for violence, and for love.
Many crashes and crushes are present throughout the film: crashlanding, personality crash, and an illicit crush. And yet, Nelson Yeo’s epic Odyssey-like journey remixes a familiar myth with wuxia, melodrama, queer cinema, and a love for 90s HK cinema, filling the film with conflict, poetry, whimsy, and camp. What will it take for Chang Er to reconcile her eternal regret and loneliness? Will Chang Er and The Bandit work together and turn cosmic loneliness into an uncanny co-habitation? THE HOUSE ON THE MOON tackles big questions with a playful remix of genres and conventions, while keeping its audience close to its storytelling.
