Night Journey

Official Selection, 2025 Ji.hlava International Documentary Film Festival

Since 2012, filmmaker Tsai Ming-liang has been lowering our cortisol with his Walker series, starring longtime artistic soulmate Lee Kang-sheng as a monk-like character who traverses different environments at a pace all his own. This time, Lee walks through Jihlava, Czechia, his nearly still presence punctuated by stray cats and night owls trying to get home. The Walker takes gentle steps on cobblestones in front of closed storefronts, inching forward at a crosswalk as a driver stops longer than necessary. Other people are observing too: a theater audience watches footage of the film; Anong Houngheuangsy steals glances outside a bar.
