Liu Juan, Wang Juan, and Wu Lian. They all refer to the same girl with no name, which happens to be the Chinese title of A GIRL UNKNOWN. In this breathtaking feature debut, filmmaker Zou Jing takes us through a young woman’s life from childhood to early adulthood, from village to the big city, as she is passed between three different families, each giving her a new name. In the process, she becomes a prism through which we see a rapidly transforming nation, where gender dynamics and economic stakes clash and conspire.
An ambitious, artful achievement, Zou reworks familiar themes of the coming-of-age story—women’s struggles, traumatic memories, and an uncertain future—and makes the film entirely her own. A GIRL UNKNOWN’s girl is not merely one among a billion. Her story becomes, and is, a history of contemporary China, where progress and struggle intertwine and leave irreversible impacts on individual lives. Her choices reflect the tensions that her generation face amid the uneven distribution of resources and the unreasonable expectations imposed by society. When the lights come up, one cannot help but respond affectively: to care, perhaps even deeply, for girls like her.
