We Are Born Good

Official Selection, 2026 Toronto International Film Festival

“Have you ever done something that made you feel like a bad person?”

When Singapore fried noodles get mixed up with beef chow fun in a takeout order, a slew of petty revenge flares up between customer Zoey, an aspiring actress burdened by debt and failure, and Wing Kat, an ex-prisoner/restaurant owner. Vandalism, toilet flooding, and fake sex worker profiles are just the beginning in this unhinged comedic feud.

Zoey’s and Wing Kat’s antics aren’t ignited by beef. They’re fueled by deeper tensions. What follows them is trauma, financial pressures, family, and social judgment. At their breaking point, their war is a substitute for their frustration towards the systems responsible for their torment. As violence unravels, so does an unexpected connection between the two.

Inspired by a viral CCTV street dispute turned spectacle, director Yeung Leung Cheun explores hopelessness, anger, and exhaustion in contemporary Hong Kong, and WE ARE BORN GOOD cooks with morality, justice, and a dash of vengeance to serve us empathy.
