“Do you want to live with mom or dad?” This deceptively simple question haunts seven-year-old Ah Girl as she navigates a split home, unreliable divorced parents, a younger sister, and first crushes in 1994 Singapore.

Doing everything she can to protect her little sister Ah Tian from the realities they face, Ah Girl (played by an unforgettable Ong Xuan Jing) starts a black market bubblegum shop at school in order to alleviate the financial struggles that may just send her sister away. With parents more concerned with their revolving door of lovers, Ah Girl proves to be scrappier and smarter than any of the unreliable, irritable adults around her.

Ang Geck Geck Priscilla’s feature debut, inspired by her own childhood, delivers a devastatingly innocent perspective of a fragmented family. The unsettling world in AH GIRL is a vulnerable reality for children who make the most of the good and bad in a confusing world of adults who seem to always lie. Filmmaker Ang shares, “This is also a story about self love.” With the weight of her family’s future on her shoulder, can’t a girl just wear her red heels and have some ice cream?
