Baby Jackfruit Baby Guava

Em bé đồng bóng, em bé ngạo nghễ và em bé đau lòng

Directed by Nông Nhật Quang

Official Selection, 2026 Visions du Reel
Official Selection, 2026 Hot Docs Festival

Something keeps pulling Quang back to Lào Cai, away from his queer life in Hà Nội.

When his nephew, Baby Guava, was born, his conservative mother Cúc, his sister Mai, recently diagnosed with schizophrenia, and a detached Quang all struggled to keep the family peace and navigate deep-rooted conflicts and resentment. In his personal first feature, director Nông Nhật Quang playfully, tenderly, and most courageously unearths family and personal archives before and after the arrival of Baby Guava.

An experience all too familiar with queer subjects, the film specifically asks how to connect with a family that knows almost nothing about the biggest facets of one’s identity. How does one keep family close but also accept that the queer and the biological may always be in conflict or parallel to each other? When making a documentary so close to home (literally, emotionally, and figuratively), how can Nông Nhật Quang as both a director and character in the film negotiate the ethical and emotional boundaries in tense familial encounters?

Is Quang more of a Flamboyant Baby or Dutiful Uncle? Part documentary, part experimental film, part melodrama, part comedy, BABY JACKFRUIT BABY GUAVA considers a queerly non-queer family undergoing massive and heartfelt changes.
