Announcing the 11th SDAFF Spring Showcase Audience Award Winner

The votes are in and we’ve got a winner! Congratulations to Closing Night Film FREE CHOL SOO LEE for winning the 11th SDAFF Spring Showcase’s Audience Award. The win continues a long tradition of documentary films taking the Spring Showcase’s sole prize. Previous documentary winners include Try Harder! (2021), Minding the Gap (2018), Abacus: Small Enough to Jail (2017), The Music of Strangers: Yo-Yo Ma and the Silk Road Ensemble (2016), To Be Takei (2014), and Harana (2013).

The 2022 SDAFF Spring Showcase Audience Award runner-ups are ANITA and BIG NIGHT!.

ABOUT THE FILM: Directed by Julie Ha and Eugene Yi, FREE CHOL SOO LEE is an investigative documentary following the story of Chol Soo Lee, a wrongfully convicted Korean American immigrant whose story inspired a pan-ethnic Asian American movement in the 1970s and 80s.
