Ma, I Love You

Qi Qi’s one dream is to study in France. Her mother Bee Ling’s one dream is to stay next to Qi Qi. Every. Second. Of. Every. Day. One problem: Qi Qi’s international aspirations are founded on wanting to see the world, but also to escape the overbearing weight of her mother’s love. Though the death of Qi Qi’s father years ago makes it hard for them to let go of each other, Qi Qi longs for independence and will weave an intricate web of lies to make sure her dreams come true.

Filmmaker Chiu Keng Guan (Great Day, SDAFF ‘11) delivers a charming look at the intimate, everyday moments between a single mother-only daughter duo and their hilariously intense ways of loving. What does it mean to care and heal through shared grief? Through love and sacrifice? Through needs and wants?

A joyful and heart wrenching, double coming-of-age story, MA, I LOVE YOU reminds us that no matter your age, we are always learning, even if the journey requires a little bit of innocent deception.
