Congratulations to FINDING HER BEAT for winning the 12th SDAFF Spring Showcase’s Audience Award. The win continues a long tradition of documentary films taking the Spring Showcase’s sole prize. Previous documentary winners include Free Chol Soo Lee (2022), Try Harder! (2021), Minding the Gap (2018), Abacus: Small Enough to Jail (2017), The Music of Strangers: Yo-Yo Ma and the Silk Road Ensemble (2016), To Be Takei (2014), and Harana (2013).
The film screening on Saturday, April 22, 2023 featured a Q&A with film subjects Jennifer Weir and Tiffany Tamaribuchi, local artist Diana Wu of Naruwan Taiko and a live taiko performance.
About the film: If revolutions awaken to the beat of taiko drums, brace yourselves for the big one. Follow taiko drummers from two continents as they defy the male-dominated art form to put together an all-star women-centered concert led by the passionate and visionary Korean adoptee Jennifer Weir. Like surprising beauty emanating from a cracked geode, these artists channel long-quieted feelings into pounding, brilliant energy, and ordinary lives reverberate to heart-thumping beats as if marching off to war.
