Master dance choreographer Sydney Loyola brought her art from Palawan, Philippines to the San Francisco Bay Area. She also brought along the pain of being marginalized – from the neighborhood kids with rigid notions of masculinity to a father who exuded patrimonial disappointment through absence. Amidst the Pride Marches and culture of acceptance, Sydney decides on gender affirmation surgery, though she discovers that even in San Francisco, there is a long road to justice and acceptance.

San Diego’s own Benito Bautista and Emma Francisco (Harana, Spring Showcase 2013) follow Sydney through her years in the ocean of self-discovery. With gorgeous dance choreography and an emotionally resplendent finale, THE ROAD TO SYDNEY captures resilience and community, art and social change, with hope and sparkle.
