In ALL THAT WE LOVE, Emma Gwon (Margaret Cho) is unhinged by the death of her beloved dog, Tanner, and her daughter Maggie’s bombshell decision to move to Australia. This one-two punch catapults Emma from her daily routine into a messy midlife reevaluation.
Set against a sun-drenched LA, Emma collides with a kaleidoscope of characters wrestling with their own life remixes. Her long-absent ex-husband, Andy returns from Singapore amid a divorce and career nosedive. Teetering on the tightrope of newfound sobriety in his mukbang influencer sister’s (comedian Atsuko Okatsuka) apartment, his sudden reappearance churns up old wounds. Meanwhile, Emma’s best friend, Stan (Modern Family’s Jesse Tyler Ferguson), channels his grief into self-reinvention, struggling to maintain his sanity and wardrobe in the emotional whirlwind.
Director Yen Tan (1985, SDAFF ‘18) wrote ALL THAT WE LOVE because he’d never seen a movie that dealt properly with the vulnerability, humor, and glimmers of hope in the weeks after losing a pet. In the process, Tan traverses the heartwarming turbulence, comedy, and pathos of life’s unexpected second acts, and how love demands the courage to apologize and the grace to forgive. Echoing throughout is Daniel Johnston’s plaintive refrain, “Don’t give up until / True love will find you in the end.”
