After The Rain

Thousands of children perished in the 2008 Sichuan earthquake. To help families grieve, the government encouraged parents to have a second child, an act of twisted mercy designed to “replace” the dead so parents can shed the past. But parents cannot. And as much as they may want to, neither can the replacement siblings, forever living in the shadow of loss. Jian Fan’s extraordinary documentary catches up on this social experiment a decade later, following two children, born out of tragedy but now in search of their own identities.
