Girls Of Night

女ばかりの夜

Directed by Kinuyo Tanaka

Tanaka’s second collaboration with screenwriter Sumie Tanaka (Forever a Woman) is a study of Japan’s new sex work rehabilitation centers, formed after the 1956 Prostitution Prevention Law. Focusing on one promising candidate Kuniko, they explore without moral judgment the burdens of reform and the attachments and hypocrisies that keep it at arm’s length. GIRLS OF NIGHT is Tanaka at her most hard-boiled, a TohoScope tableau of sisterhood and the shadows of night.
