Love Under The Crucifix

お吟さま

Directed by Kinuyo Tanaka

In 16th century Japan, when local rulers banned Christianity, the young Ogin dared to love her childhood sweetheart, the Christian samurai Ukon. However, it’s not just the cultural tides that keep Ogin’s feelings a secret; Ukon’s ascetic devotion to scripture forbids him from reciprocating Ogin’s passions. The turmoil is further complicated by the entrance of a wealthy merchant who asks for Ogin’s hand. Tanaka’s final film as director showcases her tonal command of sublimated desire, and the technical scale of the color jidaigeki sweeping Japan.
