Pacific Arts Movement (presenters of the San Diego Asian Film Festival) is hosting a panel with Phil Yu (Angry Asian Man), Jeff Yang, and Phil Wang (Wong Fu Productions) (scheduled to appear) the authors of the book, RISE: A Pop History of Asia America from the Nineties. RISE discusses thirty years of Asian American pop — with contributors from all around the country and from different walks of life, the book brings together an ever-growing community of Asian Americans. The panel discussion takes place at the 11th SDAFF Spring Showcase on Saturday, April 23 at 5PM at the Ultrastar Cinemas in Mission Valley, San Diego. The book has special connections to San Diego, as UCSD-graduate co-author Philip Wang is joined by other San Diego-based contributors, making this panel even more personal. Joining the panel are book contributors Linda Chung, artist and illustrator for the book and screenwriter William Yu.

This festival, historically the largest platform of Asian cinema on the West Coast, strives to represent the Asian American Pacific Islander (AAPI) community through storytelling. This past year has been one of the biggest years in Asian American pop culture, especially in terms of Asian and Asian American faces in the mainstream. This conversation will reflect over the history of Asian American pop, taking a nostalgic look at three decades of art, community, and identity.
