And so it begins. 2024 is off to a fast start in what promises to be quite a ride of a year. The San Diego Asian Film Festival Spring Showcase has you covered. Strap in with the tonic of your choice. For those who want an escape, there’s the high-stakes melodrama of A NORMAL FAMILY or the pretty-boy heist thriller THE MOON THIEVES. For those in need of an extra dose of inspiration, documentaries like ASHIMA and CELLULOID UNDERGROUND shine the way. For an example of triumph against the seemingly impossible, check out our tribute to the late Tibetan master Pema Tseden. Whatever fix you choose, this year’s Spring Showcase posits that in times of doomscrolling and division, we can choose the sublime of the cinematic experience.
