Bollywood fantasies meet New Jersey suburbs in this early comedy by Nisha Ganatra (Late Night). The great Roshan Seth is Gopal, who gets one hell of a Diwali double-whammy: his adult daughter is moving to a Mongolian yurt with her German boyfriend, while his wife decides to return to India. Alone for the holidays, Gopal enters a dismal cycle of self-grooming, newspaper reading, and watching 1970s Bollywood classics on TV. But what really spins him into semi-deliria is chancing upon his daughter’s leftover Cosmo magazines, whose quizzes reveal to him that he is a bona-fide “ditchable dude.” Suddenly it dawns on him. Everyone’s left.

Enter Mrs. Shaw (Carol Kane), the quirky, boozy next-door neighbor who Gopal used to find improper, but who now appears like a shooting star from his favorite old movies. COSMOPOLITAN captures the comedy of learning to date in old age and in another culture, complete with puppy dog antics and retro Jackson Heights musical numbers.
